Birthright Israel Sees Surge, But Who's Paying for My Grandkid's Trip?

2026-10-07 · Grumpy Old Folk

So, Birthright Israel is expecting its strongest demand in nearly a decade, huh? Apparently, three years after those attacks, young Jews are lining up to get a free trip to Israel. Good for them. But let me tell you something: back in my day, we didn't need fancy free vacations to connect with our heritage. We had borscht and guilt. That was enough.

And who's footing the bill for this, I ask? Probably some rich donor who thinks a ten-day bus tour will solve everything. Meanwhile, my grandson can't even call his grandmother without expecting a Venmo request. But sure, send them all to Tel Aviv to Instagram their hummus.

Elias Saratovsky says registration opens next summer. Great. Another reason for my grandkids to ignore me while they post photos of the Western Wall. In my day, we walked uphill both ways to synagogue, and we liked it! Now they need a birthright to feel Jewish? Feh. Wake me when they offer a trip for grandparents who just want a decent bagel.
